Resume Writing: Objective

In resume writing, objective statements are where you plainly state what you want, what you've got, and where you want to be. In other words, it's the section of your resume where you mention your career ambitions, aims and mainly what you can do for your employer.

Resume experts argue over whether this section is really necessary. Most seem to agree that if you are a recent college graduate, you should state an objective. Another category of job seeker who could utilize this portion would be those of you who are changing careers. If you don't fall into either of these two categories, most resume experts seem to think that any job objectives can be reviewed nicely in your cover letter.

Should you decide to use the objective, then be sure to explain the type of work you want. And don't use any more than four lines explaining this because the more brief and to the point you make your objective statement, the better chance you'll have to convey your message to the person skimming through hundreds of resumes.

Here are a few good examples that should help you crafting your objective statement:

Objective: To obtain a position as a Senior Tax Consulting Manager that lets me utilize my excellent research and analytical skills.

Objective: To obtain a position as an Executive Director in the Human Resources department that lets me utilize my excellent communication and recruiting skills.

Keep in mind that your career objective should match the job advertised. You are very likely to be asked to explain your statement during your interview.

Also keep in mind that, in constructing your objective statement, you should keep your objective realistic, concise and targeted. Vague phrases such as "opportunity for advancement" or "challenging position" will simply convey to your prospective employer that you are not clear on what you really want.
